Six Tamil Fundamentalists arrested for planting a bomb near former Puducherry CM’s Residence

Officials on Friday said that a special court in Puducherry convicted six members of the fundamentalist Tamil outfit Tamilar Viduthalai Padai of planting a bomb near the home of former Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy.

Narayanasamy’s staff discovered a bomb planted under a car in front of his official residence on January 23, 2014. The senior Congress leader was the Chief Minister of Puducherry at the time.

Later, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted an investigation and apprehended the culprits.

The bomb was defused the next day at the premises of Uppalam port by an expert team from the Tamil Nadu bomb disposal squad, who arrived on the scene and removed the bomb.

The bomb contained commercial explosive ‘Gelx,’ 21 electrical detonators, and 12 non-electric detonators, according to the prosecution’s report. The police also confirmed that the bomb was lethal and that if it had exploded, it would have resulted in the loss of life and property.

The bomb squad noted in its report to the police that if the bomb had detonated, it would have caused significant damage to people and property.

In March 2014, the Tamil Nadu ‘Q’ branch arrested four members of Tamilar Viduthalai Padai on suspicion of planting bombs near the home of the then-Puducherry Chief Minister, V. Narayanasami, as well as near the Reliance supermarket in Uthangudi, Madurai.

The NIA conducted the investigation after taking over the case in March 2014. According to NIA offices, when questioned, the accused stated that they planted the bombs in protest of the then-UPA government’s promotion of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector.
