Supporters of Raja Singh offer prayers at Bhagya Laxmi temple for his release

On Friday evening, supporters of suspended Goshamahal BJP MLA T Raja Singh visited the Bhagya Laxmi temple in Charminar and offered prayers for his release.

Approximately 50 men and women from the Mangalhat and Dhoolpet areas came to the Bhagya Laxmi temple to take part in the ‘Maha Aarti’ at the temple.  The temple’s management greeted them all warmly.

Following the prayers, the group chanted “Raja Bhai Tum Sangarsh Karo Hum Tumhare Saath Hai” and “Raja Bhai Zindabad.” Police officers from Hyderabad, who had been alerted of their visit, escorted them to the Charminar police station and then dispersed them.

After communal unrest erupted in Hyderabad over Raja Singh’s derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad, the Hyderabad police invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act to arrest him on August 26. Raja Singh is currently being held at the Central Prison Cherlapally.

The Hindu-dominated areas of Dhoolpet, Siddiamber Bazaar, Shahinayathgunj, Dhoolpet, Mangalhat, Puranapul, Kulsumpura, and Jummerat Bazaar make up the Goshamahal constituency. Raja Singh has a large fan base in the area. Following the release of the MLA’s statement on August 22, Muslim youth in the Old City staged several protests against him.

After the video of him making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad was released on August 22, the police decided enough was enough. They booked cases at different police stations in order to maintain Hyderabad as a ‘communal riot free state’. The next morning, Raja Singh was arrested.

In a Youtube video, the suspended BJP MLA made several derogatory remarks about Muslims and the Prophet Muhammad. In essence, he was not willing to let go of the fact that Munawar Faruqui was allowed to perform in the city last week.

There were protests in various parts of Old City soon after the video was released. After Raja Singh was released on bail, protests against him intensified.

As things were getting out of hand, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao called a high-level meeting and ordered the police to initiate tough action. Police officials discussed all options at an internal meeting and considered invoking the PD Act as a super available option.
