Surge in Hyderabad Rowdy Sheeter Murders Raises Alarm

Hyderabad, once hailed as one of the safest cities in India, is now grappling with a troubling rise in violent crimes — particularly the murders of rowdy sheeters. The disturbing trend not only signals an escalation in gang rivalries but also raises serious concerns over the effectiveness of policing and preventive law enforcement strategies in the city.

In the past year alone, Hyderabad has witnessed a string of murders of rowdy sheeters, with several incidents occurring in broad daylight and in public view. From Mohd. Masiuddin’s fatal stabbing in Rein Bazaar on April 14, to Aleem’s murder near a liquor shop in Mallepally in June 2024, these brutal acts have triggered fear among citizens and questions over law and order.

Each of these cases — including Mohd Mubarak Sigar’s gruesome torture and murder in Jalpally in January, and Khaja Riazuddin’s public shooting and stabbing in Balapur in August — points to the growing turf wars, financial disputes, and vendettas within Hyderabad’s criminal underworld.

While the Hyderabad Police have made arrests and detained several notorious criminals under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, the recurrence of such crimes — particularly by habitual offenders — suggests that the existing measures may not be robust enough. Senior officials acknowledge that while the PD Act acts as a deterrent for grave criminals like land sharks and murderers, it is less effective on petty offenders like chain snatchers and burglars, who often return to crime after their release.

Although rowdy sheeters are geo-tagged and routinely counseled by police officers, enforcement appears to be more intense only around festival seasons and elections. This intermittent vigilance leaves significant gaps in surveillance, allowing room for criminal elements to regroup and retaliate.

The city urgently needs a shift from reactive policing to proactive and technology-driven crime prevention. This includes continuous monitoring of known offenders, community engagement, and swift legal processes to ensure that justice is both visible and effective.

As Hyderabad battles a spike in organised crime and murders, restoring public confidence in the law enforcement system must become a top priority. The city cannot afford to lose its hard-earned reputation for safety and livability due to unchecked gang violence.
