Suzuki is gearing up to launch the 10th-generation Alto in 2026, bringing significant upgrades to the popular hatchback that has been a staple in Japan since its debut in 1979. The new-gen Alto promises groundbreaking improvements in weight, fuel efficiency, and safety, while adhering to modern automotive standards.
One of the most notable advancements in the 10th-gen Suzuki Alto is its weight reduction. Suzuki plans to shed 100 kg from the current model, which weighs between 680 kg and 760 kg. The new model will weigh in the range of 580 kg to 660 kg, comparable to the 3rd-gen Alto that launched decades ago. Achieving this lighter design is no small feat, especially with the mandatory addition of modern safety features like airbags and impact-absorbing crumple zones.
Suzuki will leverage an updated version of its lightweight Heartect platform, employing ultra-high tensile steel (UHSS) and advanced high tensile steel (AHSS) to strike the perfect balance between strength and weight reduction. This innovative design is expected to enhance both the vehicle’s safety and its overall performance.

The new Alto is designed with a strong focus on fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. Suzuki is likely to equip the hatchback with a 48V Super Ene Charge mild hybrid system, replacing the current 12V setup. This system pairs a 49 PS naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 10-kW electric motor, contributing up to 30% of the vehicle’s total power output.
The current Japan-spec Alto delivers impressive mileage figures of 25.2 km/L for the petrol model and 27.7 km/L for the mild-hybrid variant. With its enhanced hybrid system, the new Alto is expected to surpass the 30 km/L mark, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment.
The advanced Heartect platform incorporates well-designed crumple zones to absorb impact energy, ensuring improved passenger safety. Additionally, Suzuki plans to minimize the use of plastic parts in the new Alto, aligning with its commitment to sustainability.
The existing Suzuki Alto in Japan is priced at 1,068,000 yen (approximately Rs 5.83 lakh) for the petrol version and 1,218,800 yen (around Rs 6.65 lakh) for the mild-hybrid variant. The upcoming 10th-gen Alto is expected to start at around 1 million yen (approximately Rs 5.46 lakh), offering better technology and efficiency at a competitive price point.
