Taliban Executes Mastermind Behind Kabul Airport Attack, US Families Express Frustration

The Taliban leadership in Afghanistan executed the mastermind of the 2021 suicide attack at Kabul airport, which killed 13 US soldiers and 170 Afghan civilians. The individual was recognized as an IS-K (Islamic State in Afghanistan) commander. To prevent jeopardizing intelligence-gathering capabilities in the region, the US has hesitated to reveal the suspect’s identity or how they were murdered. The United States was not participating in the operation and was not informed of the fatality. The death was confirmed based on intelligence gathered by the US.

According to reports, the government has begun contacting the relatives of US military personnel killed in the attack to notify them of the suspect’s death. However, several family members were dissatisfied with the lack of information they got. Darin Hoover, the father of one of the US Marines killed in the incident, said the government’s refusal to release further information left him “frustrated, yet again.”

Despite the death of the suspect, Darin Hoover feels that the US authorities must accept blame and responsibility for what occurred. He also voiced worry that another assault may occur. Three days after the Kabul incident, the US launched a drone strike, but it later revealed that what was inside the targeted car were water jugs, and those slain were not militants, but ten Afghan civilians, including seven children.

The US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 resulted in the collapse of the Afghan government and military, which had been backed by the US for two decades, and the Taliban regaining control. The removal drew criticism both at home as well as abroad, including outrage at the abandoning of Afghans and US weaponry. During Republican-led hearings on the withdrawal, one injured US Marine labeled the departure a “catastrophe.”
