Telangana: 10 crore meals provided within GHMC under Annapurna Food Scheme

Within the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Annapurna Food Scheme, the state government’s flagship food program since 2014, has been providing 10 crore meals.

In Hyderabad, the scheme provides food to the urban poor, particularly daily wage workers. It was created to ensure that no one goes hungry, according to GHMC authorities on Monday.

The Annapurna Food Scheme offers nutritious food at a low price of just Rs 5. The meal includes rice, sambar, curry, and pickles.

In 2014, 150 Annapurna centers introduced the Annapurna Food Scheme, also known as the Annapurna Canteens. More than 45,000 lunches are served daily as a result of the program, which quickly gained popularity.

As of before the COVID-19 pandemic, only lunch was provided for a small fee of Rs 5; however, during the lockdown, lunch and dinner were provided free of charge. Furthermore, it increased the number of meals provided by several folds.

In the first lockdown period, lunch was provided by Annapurna canteens free of cost to 373 centers within GHMC limits, and dinner was provided to 259 centers. A total of 2.2 crore meals were served during 2021-21.

Mobile Annapurna canteens were used during lockdowns to reach out to a maximum number of people at their doorsteps since they are located at major landmarks, popular streets, markets, and major government hospitals.

Additionally, Annapurna canteens equipped with seating arrangements will also be established, and in Phase-I, 32 locations have been identified throughout the city. A seating facility is already available at the Annapurna Canteen at Kukatpally.

These canteens are not only for the financially disadvantaged. The primary goal of these canteens is to ensure that no human being goes hungry or lives in food insecurity. These canteens are located in Hyderabad and serve a large and diverse population with various economic, occupational, ethnic, religious, and gender identities.
