Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao unveiled 466 new 108 ambulances and 228 Amma Vodi (transportation facility for pregnant women) at Peoples Plaza in Hyderabad on August 1. The new 108-ambulance fleet includes 34 Hearse Vehicles, which are specialist vehicles used to convey the bodies of the deceased to their homes for free.
175 of the 108 ambulance fleet’s existing 426 emergency vehicles have been replaced with new ones, and 29 new ambulances have been added to new routes. Similarly, the Amma Vodi fleet’s 228 non-emergency vehicles have been replaced, and the 34 outdated Hearse Vehicles have been replaced with new ones.
T Harish Rao, the state’s finance minister, stated that the addition of new emergency vehicles would considerably improve Telangana’s emergency health care services. He emphasized the state government’s efforts to improve healthcare services, highlighting the existence of Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances and newborn ambulances in every district.
Harish Rao further stated that the state government would pay the mobile phone costs of ASHA workers and grant smartphones to newly hired ASHA employees in Hyderabad. Furthermore, the salaries of 108 staff would be increased in four stages.

In addition, the government is working to improve healthcare infrastructure by creating a 100-bed hospital in each constituency and establishing medical colleges in existing hospitals. The addition of four Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) hospitals in Hyderabad and one in Warangal will bring the total number of government hospital beds to 50,000.
According to the finance minister, the state’s healthcare system is being prepared to handle any pandemic emergency such to the recent Covid-19 outbreak. The Telangana government intends to strengthen healthcare services and emergency response capacities for the benefit of its citizens through these projects.
