Telangana Drug Control Administration Raids Medical Shops in Government Hospitals Over Regulatory Violations

In a significant regulatory sweep, the Telangana Drug Control Administration (DCA) has conducted raids on 15 private medical shops operating within the premises of government hospitals across Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Warangal, and Karimnagar. These inspections have led to the issuance of show-cause notices to the shops, with authorities citing various regulatory violations.

The targeted shops include prominent outlets such as Vyshnavi Medical and General Stores and Jeevan Usha Sravanthi Generic Medical Stores within Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad. At Niloufer Hospital, Sai Pharmacy and Amrit Pharmacy faced similar scrutiny, along with Jana Jeevani Jyothi Stores at the Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburz. In Secunderabad, Gandhi Hospital’s Thirumala Medical and General Stores and Rani Rudrama Devi Jeevandhara Pharmacy were among the affected outlets. The sweep also extended to MGM Hospital in Warangal and medical stores in Karimnagar, where Jeevandhara Pharmacy and Praja Aarogya Pharmacy were inspected.

According to DCA officials, the raids revealed multiple regulatory breaches at these medical stores. The most common violations included the sale of drugs without a prescription, the absence of a registered pharmacist, and failure to maintain accurate drug registers and sales records. Other issues found included improper storage conditions and the presence of expired medications, which pose significant risks to patient safety.

A spokesperson from the DCA stated, “The violations observed during these inspections are serious and potentially harmful to patients who rely on these medical stores for safe and effective medications. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of pharmaceutical safety, especially within government hospital premises.”

The DCA issued show-cause notices to each of the violators and mandated them to submit written explanations addressing the breaches. Following the review of these responses, the administration will decide on further punitive actions, which may include fines, suspension of licenses, or permanent closure of the establishments found to be in gross violation of drug regulations.

This sweeping action by the DCA comes as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that pharmacies adhere to stringent drug control regulations, especially those located within or near government medical facilities where patients depend on accessible and trustworthy sources for their medical needs.

The crackdown underscores the DCA’s commitment to enhancing patient safety and holding pharmaceutical outlets accountable for non-compliance. It also serves as a warning to other establishments, stressing the importance of adhering to drug safety protocols, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring qualified pharmacists are present to dispense medications.
