Telangana govt stands firmly behind families of Punjab, Haryana farmers: CS Somesh

The Telangana government clarified on Thursday that the cheques issued to the kin of farmers who ended up losing their lives during the farmers’ agitation in Punjab and Haryana were invalidated because the beneficiaries did not cash them within the prescribed three-month period.

The government also stated that it stands firmly behind the families of the deceased farmers in this time of grief and is committed to ensuring that this measure of assistance reaches the affected as soon as possible.

The Telangana government provided financial assistance to 709 family members of deceased farmers from Punjab and Haryana who lost their lives during the farmers agitation last year.

On May 22, this year, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao distributed 1,010 cheques to the kin of the deceased farmers.

However, a section of the media reported that cheques issued by the Telangana government to the kin of deceased farmers from Punjab and Haryana could not be cashed when presented in banks.

In response to these reports, the State government investigated the matter and discovered that 814 of the 1,010 cheques had already been cashed by the beneficiaries.

“The cheques have validity for three months. Some of the beneficiaries have not presented the cheques to their respective banks within the said period. Necessary directions have been given to the banks to revalidate all such cheques. For further assistance, the bereaved families can contact Revenue Joint Secretary Ram Singh on phone number 9581992577,” Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar said in a statement.

The Chief Secretary said, “the Telangana government firmly stands behind the families of these farmers in this moment of grief and is committed that this measure of support reaches the concerned families”.

On May 22 this year, CM KCR met with the families and distributed cheques worth Rs 3 lakh each to the bereaved families.
