Telangana Govt to Improve Medical Education and Healthcare Facilities

The Telangana government is making a concerted effort to improve medical education and tertiary healthcare facilities throughout the state.

Following Telangana’s successful exit from the Omicron-driven Covid third wave, renewed efforts are being made to expedite prestigious projects such as multispecialty health hubs, medical colleges, and the upgrading of almost all major tertiary hospitals at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,500 crore.

As part of these efforts, the State government is establishing eight medical colleges, a super-specialty hospital in Warangal, and four multispecialty hospitals Telangana, Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), which will be on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in and around the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

The state government has set aside nearly Rs 550 crore for each of eight teaching hospitals in Mancherial, Ramagundam, Jagtial, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubnagar, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Sangareddy, for a total investment of Rs 4, 400 crores. Aside from that, the state government has set aside Rs 1,100 crore to build a prestigious state-of-the-art 2,000-bed super-specialty hospital and health hub in Warangal.

Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) will establish four speciality hospitals with a minimum of 1,000 beds for the urban population in GHMC at TIMS Gachibowli, Chest Hospital, Sanathnagar, Alwal, and Dilsukhnagar. A minimum of Rs 500 crore is expected to be spent on each of the four multispecialty hospitals, with a total investment of nearly Rs 2,000 crore.

Aside from focusing on the establishment of new medical colleges, a concerted effort is underway to initiate developmental activities at almost all of the top State-run tertiary hospitals in GHMC areas.

New medical infrastructure is being built at almost all of Hyderabad’s major government hospitals, including Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Gandhi Hospital, Fever Hospital, MNJ Cancer Hospital, Chest Hospital, Erragadda, and Niloufer Hospital. The State government has spent approximately Rs 28 crore to establish CATH labs in OGH, Gandhi Hospital, and even districts such as Adilabad, Warangal, and Khammam to improve high-end health care services for heart patients.

An exclusive 200-bed capacity Mother and Child (MCH) health centre, as well as an MRI worth Rs 12.5 crore and a CATH laboratory and CT scan worth Rs 7 crore, are planned for Gandhi Hospital. So far, the State government has released Rs 176 crore to Gandhi Hospital, of which Rs 100 crore has already been completed and Rs 76 crore is in the works.
