Telangana mandates wearing masks again

A month after the mask requirement was repealed, Telangana made wearing masks mandatory again on Thursday. The officials also warned that Covid cases are expected to start rising slightly in the first week of June due to the increase in cases in other areas of the country.

Several reports of Covid infections have been reported in recent days, particularly in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, so the Telangana health authorities issued an alert on Thursday urging people to avoid crowded areas and give booster doses to vulnerable people.

According to Dr G Srinivasa Rao, Telangana’s director of public health, “With cases such as those in Delhi and Haryana increasing, we must remain vigilant, particularly about new variants. Covid numbers may increase to some extent, but it’s unlikely we will see surges like waves in the past. Though wearing masks is mandatory in crowded places, failing to wear one may lead to a fine of Rs 1,000.”

It is important to note that the level of Covid antibodies in the general population is extremely high. According to him, this is a good thing as it means that the susceptible population is very small. The level of seropositivity among the general population is 92.7, ranging from 89.2% in Bhadadri to 97% in Hyderabad. The immunity factor does not only protect those with antibodies, but also those without antibodies.

People can continue to live a normal life, but should ensure that masks are in use and Covid vaccines are distributed to those who have missed out, he said. Telangana will be experiencing a number of weddings, family festivals and functions in the coming months that will definitely attract large crowds. The best thing that can be done is to wear masks during such events, he further said.

It is still important to get your booster shots and second doses in time, even though we are potentially at a lower risk, he said.
