Telangana scores 100 in providing power supply to agriculture, industrial

State Energy and Climate Index (SECI) of NITI Aayog reveals that Telangana outperformed other States, including BJP-ruled ones, in the energy sector, scoring a perfect 100 in the hours of electricity supplied to industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as energy savings in commercial and public buildings, and regulatory assets.

SECI reports that Telangana, which secured an overall rank of 17, achieved a score of 86.1 on the parameters of Average Cost of Supply (ACS) and Average Revenue Realised (ARR), as well as scoring 84.5 on the parameter of Emission Intensity of GSDP when it comes to environmental sustainability.

States that are ruled by the BJP, such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, along with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, scored 100 in the category of industrial power supply. While Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh scored a meagre 11.4, 1.7, 61.1, and 97.7 scores respectively, the state of Andhra Pradesh scored 5.6 in the category of power supply to agriculture.

Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh scored zero, 50, zero and 50 respectively for energy savings in commercial and public buildings, while Arunachal Pradesh scored 50.

NITI Aayog reports that the larger States – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Telangana – are making significant efforts in adopting Energy Conservation Building Codes and are leading in energy saving in public and commercial buildings.

Gujarat topped the index, while Telangana performed better in two indicators than Gujarat, according to vice-chairman B Vinod Kumar of the Telangana State Planning Board. In terms of access, affordability, and reliability of energy sources, Telangana outperformed Gujarat.

Telangana came in second place, followed by Kerala, in providing accessible, affordable, and reliable energy. The data shows that Telangana provided better electricity to agriculture than Gujarat, he said.

The SECI index is the first to show how states and union territories (UTs) are doing in the climate and energy sector. An in-depth analysis of individual States is expected to enhance service delivery on various aspects of energy.

The parameters were designed keeping in mind India’s goals for climate change and clean energy transition. There are three parts to the report. The first part explains the background, the objective, and the current energy scene in India.

A series of global and national indices, as well as a comparison of the Indian economy with a few other countries, provide an insight into how these economies fare in relation to energy and climate.

Reviewing all existing indices reveals that there is no comprehensive index for evaluating the performance of states in the energy sector. All forms of energy should be included in a comprehensive SECI that covers affordability, accessibility, efficiency, discom performance, and climate friendliness.
