Telangana: Student commits suicide as college refuses to release certificates

An intermediate student reportedly committed suicide on Monday after his certificates were withheld by the college in Karimnagar district.

The deceased, identified as Jakkula Anjith, a resident of Karimnagar, had passed the intermediate exams and wanted to apply to engineering colleges. Anjith failed to pay the full fee at SR Sri Gayatri College in Hyderabad, so the certificates were withheld.

Management was repeatedly requested to release the deceased’s certificates by his parents. As soon as the money was arranged, they promised to pay the fee. Nonetheless, management refused to budge on its demand. Although Anjith went through the first phase of counseling for engineering colleges, the management withheld his certificates.

According to police, Anjith became depressed after the college administration refused to issue certificates allowing the student to enlist in an engineering course, claiming that the certificates would be issued only after a Rs 40,000 fee was paid. When his father Srinivas approached the principal, the latter was said to have commented that the certificates would be issued only after Anjith died.

When the student became depressed over the issue, he attempted suicide on August 27 and passed away on Monday.

A case was opened after the victim’s father filed a complaint. Investigations were launched.

The bereaved parents were spoken to by Karimnagar MP and Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president Bandi Sanjay Kumar. The chief minister’s silence on the issue was questioned by him.

On August 18, the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) directed district Intermediate educational officers to conduct inspections of all private junior colleges and ensure that no college withheld student certificates for any reason. Violations of the rules, regulations, and guidelines will be taken seriously and prosecuted.

The TS BIE stated that it is the principal’s responsibility to issue all certificates related to students leaving the junior college and that no certificates should be withheld for any reason.
