Telangana: Win Rs 500 by sending photos of people dumping trash on roads

With the intention of maintaining town cleanliness, Telangana’s Peddapalli civic authorities have launched a program called “Photo Kottu Gift Pattu” (take a picture, win a gift).

In a recent announcement, the Peddapalli authorities promised to reward civilians Rs 500 for taking photos of those dumping trash on roadsides and dumping plastic in open places and drainage systems.

This reward scheme to achieve Swatch Peddapalli has been designed to educate the people about maintaining the cleanliness of their localities.

Citizens that catch people in the act are told to send photos via WhatsApp to 63099-99940. Later, citizens will be contacted and offered the reward amount. Municipality staff then use WhatsApp photos provided to identify people who dump trash or single-use plastic, and a fine of more than Rs 500 will be imposed.

In an effort to educate people about how to keep their communities clean, Municipal Commissioner Ch Thirupathi came up with the reward concept. A fine, however, would make people more cautious about dumping trash on roads and drainage systems.

He said most people are aware of the health risks associated with dumping trash on roads and drainages, but they continue to do so due to negligence.

Both retailers and users of single-use plastic will be subject to legal action, he stated.

GHMC introduces Sensitive Caution Points

The GHMC has also introduced a unique concept of Sensitive Caution Points (SCPs) at several hotspots where trash is unabashedly thrown.

Through the use of cameras and loudspeakers controlled by specialized software, the civic body can chase away people who throw trash on roads, especially during late night hours.

People who came by night with tons of trash to dump on wayside roads were caught by surprise. Upon hearing loudspeakers blasting warnings, they were chased away.
