Telangana: Worship places to get relief from high electricity bills

Electricity charges for places of worship in Telangana state will be greatly reduced. Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Ltd. (TSSPDCL) and Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Ltd. (TSNPDCL) have proposed lowering electricity rates for mosques, temples, churches, and gurdwaras across the state from Rs.7 to Rs.5 per unit.

In addition, an increase in fixed demand charges has been proposed. The existing fixed demand charges for places of worship under LT-5 (B category) with a load of less than 2 KW are to be increased from Rs. 21 to Rs. 30, while energy charges are to be reduced from Rs. 6.40 to Rs. 5 per unit.

Large places of worship are currently classified as HT-2, and demand charges of Rs.475 are being levied as demand charges. An 11KV connection costs Rs.8 per unit, a 33KV connection costs Rs.8 per unit, and a connection above that costs Rs.7.80 per unit.

The latest proposals will provide significant relief to HT category places of worship. DISCOM made the decision after considering the requests for lower electricity rates made by the organizers of places of worship.

Only non-profit places of worship and those registered under the Income Tax Act will be eligible for a rate reduction. If the ERC approves these proposals, the process of reducing electricity consumption in places of worship will begin on 1 April 2023.

Domestic electricity tariff likely to rise from time to time

Domestic electricity tariffs are likely to rise from time to time, similar to petrol and diesel prices, beginning in the financial year 2023. The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) issued draft orders granting the electricity distribution company (Discom) complete freedom to increase electricity bill tariffs without seeking permission from the state government.

The State Electricity Control Board issued ‘Second Amendment Orders 2022’ in response to the Central Power Department’s orders. It has been clarified that the previously issued electricity tariff revision guidelines have been revised for the second time.
