Telangana’s Kanti Velugu screens over 1.58 crore people

More than 1.58 crore people have had their eyes tested so far as part of the second phase of the Telangana government’s ambitious Kanti Velugu program, which is billed as the world’s largest eye screening program.

Across the state, free eye-testing camps are being held. Reading glasses have been distributed to a total of 22,21,494 people.

The program, which began with the slogan “Blindness Free Telangana,” is still running in all 12,304 Gram Panchayats and Municipal Wards.

The first phase of the Kanti Velugu program was launched on August 15, 2018 by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The program lasted 8 months and provided free eye exams to 1.50 crore people. 50 lakh people were given spectacles at no cost.

On January 18, 2023, the Chief Minister began the second phase. 96.21 percent of people had their eyes tested in 89 working days. The government has decided to complete all eye tests within the time frame of 100 working days.

Officials stated that special measures were taken to ensure that the program did not disrupt other medical services. All public representatives, as well as the Medical Department, Panchayat Raj, Municipal, and other departments, are taking part. To monitor team performance, the government has established quality control teams at the state and district levels.

According to medical officials, if the program continues in this manner, there is a chance of conducting eye tests for 2 crore people.

The Telangana government is proud to embark on such a massive program, which has never been attempted by any other state in the country.

The Kanti Velugu program is being vigorously implemented throughout the state in accordance with the government’s target, with advance plans, continuous monitoring, daily reviews, analysis, video conference and meetings, and the correction of deficiencies as needed.
