Telugu Desam Party Opts Out of Lok Sabha Polls in Telangana

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has opted out of contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, signaling a shift in its political strategy. While the party remains part of the NDA in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, it is yet to decide on supporting any particular candidate or party in Telangana.

Instead, the TDP plans to re-enter the political arena by participating in the local body elections expected to take place in June or July this year. The decision not to contest the Lok Sabha polls reflects the turbulent journey the TDP has experienced in recent years. Following the arrest of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in a corruption case by Andhra Pradesh police, the party refrained from participating in the Assembly polls held in Telangana last November.

Subsequently, several leaders, including the State president, Ksanai Gnaneswar, defected to other parties, leaving the TDP in Telangana without clear leadership.

Despite managing to secure two seats in the 2018 Assembly polls, the TDP’s influence has waned, with a decline in both electoral performance and party membership. The appointment of a new president for the Telangana unit is expected to be addressed at the TDP’s annual conclave, Mahanadu.

Telangana, with its 17 Lok Sabha seats, is set to go to polls on May 13, with the results to be announced on June 4.
