The Legacy of Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed: From Hamdard to Rooh Afza

Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed, an Urdu and Persian language expert, founded Hamdard and invented Rooh Afza, a refreshing herbal drink for the summer. Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed, born in 1883, pursued the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.

He founded a herbal shop in Delhi in 1906, which grew into a production house in 1920. Rooh Afza, a beverage intended at preventing heat strokes and revitalising the soul, was created using traditional Unani medicines.

Mirza Noor Ahmad, an artist, designed the Rooh Afza labels in many colours in 1910. The labels were printed by the Bolton Press of Bombay (Mumbai) due to the lack of colour printers at the time.

The partition of India in 1947 had an impact on Rooh Afza’s journey. While Hakim Abdul Majeed’s eldest son remained in India, Mohammad Saeed founded Hamdard in Karachi, Pakistan. The company grew swiftly. Mohammad Saeed’s son, Hakim Mohammad Said, gave the business to the people of Bangladesh following their independence in 1971.

Rooh Afza became popular in India and was initially sold in glass bottles before shifting to plastic. Due to a scarcity of the essential plants, there was a Rooh Afza shortage in 2019.Other items such as Pachnaul, Safi, and Rogan Badam Shirin have been introduced under the Rooh Afza brand over the years.
