Three people die in lightning strikes as heavy rain lashes Telangana

Three people passed away after being struck by lightning in different parts of Telangana as heavy rain lashed the state, including the capital Hyderabad, disrupting normal life.

Lightning-related deaths were reported late Monday in the districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Hanamkonda.

L. Sreenu, a farmer returning home from his fields, was killed by lightning in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

Sheikh Jaan Bi, a housewife sitting in her courtyard, died as a result of lightning in Khammam district. In the third incident, a man standing under a tree in the Hanamkonda district was killed by a thunderbolt.

On Monday evening, heavy rain lashed parts of the state, including the state capital Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, a massive downpour inundated roads and low-lying areas, bringing normal life to a halt for a few hours.

In just three hours, some parts of Hyderabad received 9.1 to 12.7 cm of rain. This is the most rain that has fallen in Hyderabad in over a decade during the month of September. The city’s Mehdipatnam area received 11.25 cm of rain until midnight. On September 6, 2017, the highest rainfall of 9 cm in 24 hours was recorded.

Drains in several parts of the city were overflowing, flooding the streets. Long traffic jams were observed on major roads. People returning home from offices and workplaces were stranded due to the weather at almost all major traffic junctions.

Drivers were stuck in traffic for several hours. Many residents arrived home after midnight. Some areas also experienced power outages.

Rainwater also entered some colonies’ houses as a result of overflowing lakes and tanks. Asif Nagar, Gudimalkapur, Malakpet, and Musheerabad were severely flooded.

Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) teams were called in to help clear the waterlogging.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre predicts rain in the state for the next four days. Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely in isolated areas across Telangana, according to the forecast.
