TIMS Gachibowli: From Pandemic Hub to Deserted Hospital

The Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) in Gachibowli, once bustling with over 1,000 staff, including doctors, treating up to 1,500 patients daily during the COVID-19 pandemic, now stands nearly deserted. The 14-story building, hastily established as an ad hoc response to the health crisis, currently serves only around 10 to 30 outpatients, with a staff of roughly 20 individuals.

TIMS Gachibowli, which initially thrived as a lifeline during the pandemic, is now grappling with an uncertain future. Hospital sources reveal that their services are limited to outpatient care, lacking inpatient facilities. On a typical day, a handful of patients seek general outpatient services, and the staff, including three doctors, accommodate their needs. Two ambulances remain stationed at the hospital.

The once well-equipped hospital now sees its amenities going to waste. Over 1,000 beds lie untouched, covered in a layer of dust. It’s worth noting that TIMS Gachibowli was inaugurated as the Games Village in Gachibowli on October 6, 2007, by the then Chief Minister, YS Rajashekhar Reddy.

During the height of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, this facility was transformed into TIMS, serving as a crucial medical institution. However, post-pandemic, apprehension among the public has deterred them from seeking care at the facility. At its peak, more than 500 doctors and support staff worked tirelessly to treat patients. Nevertheless, as the COVID-19 emergency subsided, many of them were reassigned to other hospitals or promoted to higher positions.

Presently, TIMS Gachibowli struggles to attract patients due to the lack of inpatient services and specialized medical practitioners. Some hold the belief that with appropriate government support and investment, this institution has the potential to become one of the premier healthcare facilities in India.
