The happy holiday of Makar Sankranti took a tragic turn in Telangana, where at least five people died in kite-related events during the last few days. Electrocutions, rooftop collapses, and fatalities were among the tragedies caused by the deadly ‘Chinese manja.’
In Hyderabad, a 20-year-old student called Akash died after falling from the terrace of his apartment complex in Pet Basheerabad while flying a kite. Four young people were killed in the city, with two electrocuted and two falling from rooftops.
A 30-year-old guy in Jogipet, Sangareddy district, died of electrocution while flying a kite on the terrace of a two-story house. He came into contact with a high-tension wire, fell, and eventually died from his injuries. Another youngster in Nagole died after falling from a terrace while flying a kite.

Tragically, a soldier called Kagithala Koteswar Reddy died in Hyderabad after a Chinese manja (nylon/synthetic thread) slashed his throat while he was riding a scooter on the Indira Reddy overpass in Langar Houz.
The events prompted electrical regulators to issue a warning against flying kites near power lines, underlining the risks of using metal-coated’manja,’ a good conductor of electricity.
Despite a blanket ban on manja enforced by the state government in 2016 to safeguard birds and human safety, its use continues, resulting in catastrophic outcomes during festive events such as Makar Sankranti. The authorities are investigating the instances to identify the exact cause of these tragic fatalities.
