TRS retains its crown with 55 seats, BJP inches away with 48 as AIMIM wins 44

As the much anticipated GHMC election results day came to an end, the report declared TRS as the champion with 55 seats.

However, this victory did not coincide with its historic win of the previous polls where the ruling party achieved 99 seats, wiping out even the remote chances of all other parties.

BJP came second with a very close margin of 7 seats, securing 48 divisions. Its party leaders called this a “moral victory” as they said the “leadership of Narendra Modi and his model of good governance has acceptability across regions.”

BJP secured the divisions of Chaitanyapuri, Adikmet, Jeedimetla, Lingojiguda, Musheerabad, Goulipura, Wanasthalipuram and Gachibowli, among others. Notably, the party lost by a small margin of votes in many other divisions where TRS won.

Despite being almost non-existent with a meagre number of seats in the last polls, BJP’s full-fledged campaigning strategy has managed to reward them with ten times more than its previous achievement in the South Indian city.

While BJP has nothing to lose in these elections, the local parties had a lot at stake and with the trends showing BJP on the second spot, worries for the assembly and general elections have arisen as the party entered the elections with their strong force for the first time and wiped out many seats.

With BJP’s promising start in the polls, self-congratulatory messages from many party leaders began pouring in.

AIMIM clinched the third spot and gained seats, compared to 2016’s 44 seats. The party was contesting for 60 seats this year in the Hyderabad municipal elections.

It has retained old city despite Amit Shah campaign in the area, proving that the Kingdom of Old City belongs to the Owaisi brothers. Their party won in regions of Mehdipatnam, Talab Chanchalam, Shalibanda, Dabeerpura, Rein Bazar, Barkas, Puranapul, Patthar Ghatti, Doodbowli, Chawni, Jahanuma Ramnaspura Kishan bagh, Nawabsaab Kunta, Riyasath Nagar, Shastripuram, Lalithabagh, Ahmed Nagar colony.

TRS leader, KTR had assured of a historic win with over 100 seats this time, beating its earlier record of 99.

Although the parties went all out to conduct successful campaigns, the turnout for voting was unimpressive with 46.55%.

The GHMC elections became wide-spread news in the nation with the toughest parties participating in the polls this year to secure the seat of Hyderabad city’s mayor, which is reserved for a woman this time.

However, except the topics of changing the name to Bhagyanagar, vitriolic mentions of other parties, accusations regarding the recent floods and Pakistan, there wasn’t any mention of real development by BJP, despite its hullaballoo in the elections.

Congress seemed to be pushed back with only 2 seats to its name. In view of the party’s poor performance in these elections, Telangana’s Congress Committee President N Uttam Kumar Reddy stepped down from his post and has furnished his official resignation after being the party’s state chief since 2014.

Though the results have come as a bit of a shock for TRS that had claimed of a century win with 100 seats, the new Mayor will be decided by the current ruling party itself who will govern the municipal corporation of Hyderabad.

Supporters of TRS and AIMIM were seen celebrating their respective achievements in the city while BJP’s eye towards the general elections got keener with the unexpected seats.
