TS HC seeks health department’s response on whether ORS drink harmful or not

Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice V Bhasker Reddy of the Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the Department of Medical Health to explain whether Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) were harmful to human health.

Pediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh filed a PIL in which he stated that ORS was referred to as the 20th-century wonder drug.

Counsel for the petitioner argued that the packaging and labeling of ORS contained a lot of misinformation about ORS. Moreover, the panel pointed out that a lot of energy drinks are flouting the law on the market and aren’t regulated.

According to the petitioner, any increase in glucose or salt in ORS products was harmful to human health. The Department of Health has been instructed to file a detailed counter-claim.

Telangana government had also announced the launch of the prestigious Telangana Health Profile initiative in Mulugu and Rajanna Sircilla districts as an experiment aimed at improving health services in government hospitals.

Health profile initiatives will be milestones, Harish Rao said, as they play a vital role in improving the overall quality of health care in Government hospitals.

Compensation should be paid to temple

In addition, the same panel directed the government to pay Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple compensation for the acquisition of nearly four acres in Nalgonda for the Kaleswaram project’s excavation of the gravity canal.

According to Jagan Mohan Reddy, Standing Counsel for the Endowments Department, they have no objections to the government acquiring the land provided compensation is paid.

The government’s Special Government Pleader, K Sanjeev Kumar, argued that the compensation amount would be deposited in the temple’s account as soon as the award is passed. In addition, the panel instructed the Temple to make sure the amount is deposited in an interest-bearing account.
