Türkiye to Supply Syria with 2 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas Annually

In a landmark move signaling a new era of cooperation, Türkiye has agreed to supply Syria with 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Mohammed Al-Bashir in Damascus on Thursday.

Bayraktar said the gas exports will contribute to an additional 1,300 megawatts of electricity generation in Syria, a significant boost for a country recovering from over a decade of civil conflict. The gas flows are set to begin in June, via a pipeline connecting both nations.

“Türkiye is committed to supporting Syria’s reconstruction and infrastructure recovery,” Bayraktar said, highlighting the new energy partnership as a step forward in bilateral relations following the recent end of Syria’s 13-year civil war and the ouster of President Bashar Assad.

In addition to the natural gas supply, Türkiye will also provide 1,000 megawatts of electricity to meet Syria’s short-term energy needs. Syrian Energy Minister Al-Bashir noted that reactivating the Syria-Türkiye gas pipeline will significantly improve electricity availability across the country.

The ministers also discussed finalizing a 400-kilovolt transmission line between the two nations, which is expected to deliver around 500 megawatts of additional power by the end of the year or early next year.

The cooperation deal opens avenues for Turkish investment in Syria’s mining, phosphate, and energy sectors, including electricity generation and distribution. “There is very intensive work underway to explore new natural resources, including oil and gas, both onshore and offshore,” Bayraktar added.

The agreement marks a notable shift in Türkiye’s role in Syria—from conflict-era opposition supporter to post-war reconstruction partner—underlining a pragmatic pivot in regional diplomacy and economic engagement.
