UAE Pledges $544 Million to Repair Homes After Record Flooding

The United Arab Emirates has pledged $544 million to repair the homes of Emirati families after record-breaking rainfall last week caused significant flooding and disruptions across the Gulf state. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum following a cabinet meeting, during which he stated that the funds would address damage to the homes of citizens.

The decision comes more than a week after unprecedented rainfall swept through the UAE, transforming streets into rivers and causing disruptions at Dubai International Airport, the busiest airport for international passengers. Sheikh Mohammed also mentioned that a ministerial committee has been assigned to manage the compensation process in coordination with federal and local authorities.

Dubai, one of the UAE’s seven emirates, was among the hardest hit areas. Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged that the rainfall was the heaviest the country has seen in 75 years, but emphasized that the UAE learns from every experience.

Cabinet ministers also established a second committee to assess infrastructure damage and develop solutions. The heavy storm, which brought up to two years’ worth of rain in a short period, subsided by last Wednesday. However, Dubai experienced ongoing issues with waterlogged roads and flooded homes for several days afterward.

Dubai International Airport canceled 2,155 flights and diverted 115 others due to the storm. The airport did not resume full capacity until Tuesday.
