UN Upholds Children’s Right To Education Amidst Armed Conflicts In New Resolution

Amidst the rising concerns of armed conflicts across the world, the UN Security Council on Friday has adopted a resolution regarding the protection of education in the armed conflict areas.

As per the reports, Resolution 2601 won the unanimous support from 15 member council that strongly condemns all violations that are applicable within the international law that involves the recruitment and use of children by parties to armed conflict as well as their re-recruitment, maiming, rape and other forms of sexual violence.

The resolution further condemns the attacks against schools and hospitals along with the denial of humanitarian access by the parties within the armed conflicts and all the other violations of international law.

The resolution further urges the UN member states to develop measures that would prevent and address the attacks and threats of attacks against schools and other educational facilities. It further urged the states to develop domestic legal frameworks that would ensure that the international legal obligations are upheld and respected.

The resolution adopted condemns the military use of schools against the international laws. It further recognizes that the use of armed forces and groups may make the schools targets of attacks which would eventually threaten the children’s and teachers’ safety.

With incidents like abduction, rape and other forms of sexual violence urges the member to take steps to address the equal rights for girls regarding the right to education. Resolution 2601 has called on the member states to prevent the recruitment and re-recruitment of children by the parties.

It underlines the importance of providing assistance to children with disabilities who are to be affected by the armed conflicts. It encourages the member states to take appropriate measures to ensure that the access to education is provided to all on equal basis.
