Uppal Skywalk built by HMDA ready for inauguration

According to the latest reports, the Uppal Skywalk, built by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) at a cost of Rs 25 crore, is ready for inauguration. The pedestrian-friendly facility, which has six entry and exit points, was built with around 1,000 tons of steel.

The hop-on stations are the Metro station towards Nagole Road, Ramanthapur Road, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) theme park, the Warangal bus stop near the GHMC office, and the road opposite the Uppal Electrical substation.

Aside from ensuring pedestrian safety and comfort, the skywalk will be a major attraction for the city, an official said, who added that illumination and street furniture will enhance the aesthetics of the project.

The HMDA officials said the width of the facility is 3 m and bulges to 6 m at a few stretches. “The roof material is a multi-walled polycarbonate sheet and the foundation is of reinforced cement concrete. The columns and deck are of steel,” he said.

In a press release, the HMDA stated that the skywalk has been developed keeping in mind the needs of future generations, and that it was proposed on the instruction of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao.

This facility for pedestrians will improve their safety while also reducing traffic congestion at Uppal junction.

Telangana chief secretary of urban development, Arvind Kumar inspected the under-construction skywalk recently and shared its pictures on his Twitter account saying, “Inspected the 660 meters skywalk #Uppal X-roads, being constructed by @HMDA_Gov, costing ₹25 crs & will have 9 lifts, 3 escalators & have direct access to Metro station. This will have lighting, selective shades & street furniture. Will be ready by April.”
