Uttarakhand HC seeks government’s response to Virat Kohli’s video claims

A video featuring former Team India captain Virat Kohli discussing stadium conditions has gone viral on social media, leading to legal action. The Uttarakhand High Court has taken notice of the video and issued notices to both the Uttarakhand state government and the central government led by Narendra Modi.

In the video, Kohli addresses the poor state of stadiums and the lack of playgrounds for children in India. He highlights the challenges faced by children who have to play on the streets due to a shortage of suitable spaces. The Uttarakhand High Court has asked both governments to provide a response within two weeks.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal, has directed notices to the Sports Secretary of Uttarakhand, the Urban Development Secretary of the Government of India, the Youth Affairs and Sports Secretary, and others. They have been asked to outline the policies in place for playground development.

The court expressed concern that many children do not have access to suitable play areas, and even received a letter from some children explaining how playing cricket in the streets disrupts local residents. The court emphasized the importance of physical activity for the mental development of children and noted that the lack of facilities often leads to excessive screen time, negatively impacting their physical and mental well-being.

The court stressed the necessity of playgrounds for children’s development and sought clarification from the governments regarding their policies, including those related to the ‘Khelo India program aimed at providing playgrounds for children. The case will be heard on October 9.
