The tragic death of Vaishnavi Shashank Hagawane, the 23-year-old daughter-in-law of Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) leader Rajendra Hagawane, has triggered widespread shock and outrage across Maharashtra.
Vaishnavi reportedly died by suicide by hanging at around 4:30 PM on Friday, May 16, at Bhukum village in Mulshi tehsil near Pune. The incident has prompted a police investigation into allegations of dowry harassment.
According to the complaint filed at Bavdhan Police Station, Vaishnavi had been subjected to both mental and physical harassment by her in-laws. Her family claims that prolonged abuse and dowry-related pressures led her to take the extreme step.

In a detailed statement, Vaishnavi’s family alleged that Rajendra Hagawane had demanded 51 tolas of gold, a Toyota Fortuner SUV, and silver utensils as dowry during her marriage. They further claimed that the groom’s family had insisted on hosting the wedding at a lavish venue.
The case has now caught the attention of the National Commission for Women (NCW), which has taken serious note of the alleged dowry harassment and suspicious death. The NCW has reportedly asked the Maharashtra police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
Police have registered a case and are probing all angles, including possible violations of dowry prohibition laws and abetment to suicide.
This incident has reignited debates on the continuing menace of dowry and the need for stronger safeguards for women, especially in influential political families.
