As Schools Preparing for Reopening, Parents Yet to Make Their Mind

With just four days left for the reopening of schools in the state, parents especially in Hyderabad City are yet to make their minds before giving a come on to their children for rejoining the academics as the pandemic witch hunting not at all wearing thin despite the introduction of the vaccine.

There are several apprehensions doing rounds in the minds of the parents who were detached from the duty to educate their children due to pandemic whiplash while most of the students too are now joined odd jobs to help the family in eking out bread and butter as several private schools gave already closed while the fear of repayment of dues still preventing the parents from taking a call in their children’s favour.

It is estimated that there were over five thousand private schools in the old city besides 130 to 150 government Urdu medium schools prior to the outbreak of the pandemic. A conservative estimation says that these institutions together serve education to over five lakh students from different socio-economic groups.

However, the leaders representing the school bodies especially in old city area confide that a number of schools have being shut down during the last one-and-a-half-year while many schools will not saw a same strength after the formal reopening of schools as parents from poor financial background have almost gave up their part of responsibility to send their children to school waiting for other shoe to drop from the pandemic side as it happen last year.

Out of over five thousand schools more than 25 percent i.e. around 1300 institutions have closed during the pandemic as over half of the strength of these institutions have vanished ever since the outbreak of the pandemic,” said Habeeb Abdul Rehman, President Telangana All Minorities Employees and Workers Association (T-ALLMEWA) Rangareddy District.

“Though the government run schools have sailed through the winds of adversaries, they too have suffered drastically in terms of strength. Most of the students, especially from private schools have given up their studies and are doing odd jobs to support their families,” he asserted.

“At a time when the pandemic is playing hide and seek with reports of virus convulsing again, a government’s move to reopen the schools is not at all a good decision. Government should walk a fine line before taking such decisions that would cause harm not only to students and parents but the public in general and ultimately force the government to impose restrictions if the reopening move goes wrong,” opened Syed Shoukat Ali, a community activist.
