“Because his surname is Khan”- Mehbooba Mufti on Aryan Khan case; denied bail again

Accusing the BJP of playing the communal card again to fetch votes for the party, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti reacted to the arrest of actor SRK’s son Aryan Khan and the importance the NCB is giving to the drugs case while a murder-accused faced action 5 days after the crime.

Aryan Khan had to go through the ordeal despite no evidence being found against him as his surname is “Khan”, the former CM said.

Calling the arrest a “travesty of justice” as “Muslims are targeted”, Ms Mufti reminded the government of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident where a minister’s son allegedly crushed multiple farmers to death with his SUV.

She tweeted saying, “Instead of making an example out of a Union Minister’s son accused of killing four farmers, central agencies are after a 23-year-old simply because his surname happens to be Khan. Travesty of justice that Muslims are targeted to satiate the sadistic wishes of BJPs core vote bank.”

Aryan Khan was arrested shortly after an NCB team, disguised as ordinary people, raided a cruise ship’s high-profile party and found drugs on many attendees. Though no ounce of the banned entity was found with him, the Narcotics Control Bureau took him in custody.

He was denied bail for the third time today since being arrested last week. The NCB tried to put him behind bars for longer, reasoning the court that the agency does not have a fitting reply for Aryan’s claim. Though it attempted to buy time till Friday, the court directed the agency to file its statement by Wednesday, pushing Aryan’s next possible bail plea to be heard then.

The NCB claimed that he could tamper with the evidence and influence the case by reaching out to witnesses if granted bail.

The 23-year-old along with friend Arbaz Merchant and 7 others have been in jail since the raid. His lawyer argued that the offence he has been charged with involves a one-year sentence only if proven, of which he has already spent 7 days. However, the NCB refused to back down and kept insisting to grant more time.

His previous bail request was not accepted as the magistrate seconded the NCB’s stand and said it wasn’t his court’s jurisdiction to make a decision.

Meanwhile, the son of junior home minister Ajay Mishra, Ashish Mishra was arrested after 5 days of the farmer run-over case where 4 farmers and 4 people from the convoy died after a car slammed into a group of peacefully black flag protesting farmers. Witnesses and farmers claim Ashish Mehra to be the driver of the SUV that crushed them.

Needless to say, the father-son duo alleges they weren’t at the crime scene during the incident. However, vague information and inability to explain his whereabouts pushed the police to arrest him on Saturday night.
