“Call me Rahul, not sir”- Rahul Gandhi’s reply to students win hearts

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi drew loud cheers from across the auditorium of a women’s college after his reply to a young student who addressed him as “Sir” before asking a question.  

The incident took place in Puducherry where Mr. Gandhi had come to speak to the students of Bharathidasan Government College for Women.  

A student called out to him saying, “Sir, I am here”, to ask him a question, after which Mr. Gandhi said, “Listen, my name is not sir. My name is Rahul, so call me Rahul please.” 

The reply clenched loud cheers from the students who roared to applaud him. The Congress party shared a video of the conversation on their Facebook page and has been watched over 28,000 till now.

The cheers did not stop from the Women’s College students as Mr. Gandhi continued saying, “You can call your principal ‘sir’ and teachers ‘sir’ but you call me Rahul.” 

The 50-year-old MP kept gathering applauds as he walked over the elevated platform, smiling at all students.  

The earlier student who wanted to ask him a question also clapped and took the microphone back to go ahead with the question.

Just then, someone from the stage, likely a faculty member of the college, suggested an alternate way of addressing Mr. Gandhi and said, “Sir, maybe they can call you Rahul anna?” 

“You can call me Rahul anna, that is good,” he is heard saying at the end of the 38 seconds long video that drew more cheers from the students. 

Congress called the interaction video a “candid moment” that is quickly gaining views on the social media platform.

On Wednesday, the MP arrived in Puducherry to launch the Congress party’s campaign ahead of the assembly election slated for May this year.  

With the party inches away from collapsing in the southern union territory, the members aim to bring it back to life following 4 resignations.  

With Chief Minister V Narayanaswamy, Mr Gandhi also spoke to the fisherman of the region during the visit.
