Canada Bans Passenger Flights From India, Pakistan; Cargo Flights Face No Effect

The world is facing yet another phase of the Coronavirus with the cases rising everyday. Amidst this, Canada’s government recently announced that they will be suspending passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days.

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Acts On Allegations from Politicians

As per the latest reports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (central left Liberal) was accused by the Right-leaning politicians of not doing enough to prevent the spread of the third wave of Coronavirus in Canada. Following this, Trudeau announced a 30 days ban on passenger flights from India and Pakistan. The ban in effect from 11:30 pm (0330 GMT Friday) does not affect the cargo flights.

This comes after the conservative leaders of Ontario and Quebec wrote to Trudeau to control international travel.

After the announcement, Canadian Health Minister Patty Hajdu said that Indian citizens account for 20 percent of the international passengers that enter Canada. However, recently over 50 percent of the Covid 19 positive tests are of the Indians as reported by the Canada airport officials.

In a press conference, Hajdu said that by banning the direct travels from these countries (India and Pakistan), the public health experts will have the time to understand the situation better and handle it better as well.

Omar Alghabra, the Canadian Transport Minister said that Canada will not hesitate to ban travels from other countries as well if it is needed.

India on Thursday recorded the World’s Highest Daily Tally of Covid 19 cases of 314,835 active cases. Pakistan  recorded new 5870 cases of Covid 19 on Friday.

Other Countries Also Suspend Flights From India

Amidst the deadly wave of the pandemic, Canada isn’t the only country that has suspended flights from India. Britain recently said that India may get added to their “red-list” from where travel gets banned because of high cases of Covid 19.

At the same time, France has imposed a ten day quarantine period for the people travelling from Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Argentina and India.

UAE, Hong Kong and New Zealand have suspended all flights from India while Singapore has gone under “heightened alert”. This means anyone that has travelled with a long-term or short term passholders in the past 14 days from India will not be allowed to transit through Singapore. It also includes people who already have an approval to enter Singapore.
