Cantankerous ‘cow vigilante’ may disturb communal harmony if left unchecked

The transportation of cattle especially the bulls before every Eid-ul-Adha in Hyderabad city has become a contentious issue and is gradually flaring up a row between cow vigilantes and the Muslims community. The issue is so cantankerous that, if not dealt meticulously by the police, can take an ugly turn and could lead to a communal tension in the city that may engulf the entire state.

Though the brouhaha over cattle transportation during Eid-ul-Adha became a new normal in the country ever since the BJP government came to power but this time the issue has flared up to such a level that it turned the social media into hate mongering platform with few untaught nerds from both the communities are spewing venom against each other.

Videos and voice recordings of cantankerous rhetoric and narratives between the two people are circulating on social media that even took the police by surprise. If the reports are to be believed, the Rachakonda police on Tuesday booked a case against a person for posting a provocative video that reportedly spread communal hatred among the citizens.

“It is very unfortunate to see some people going for the jugular and spewing venom against each other on social media platforms thereby harming the communal harmony of the city. In such an unsavory and vulnerable situation – that carry a potential threat to the peace and tranquility of the state capital, the police should play a proactive role in containing such incidents over social media or any other microblogging platforms by taking appropriate action against the people spreading hatred with their loathsome rhetoric. Lest the situation may take no time to engulf the entire city and the state into communal flames,” said Prof.Ameeruddin, a city-based eminent educationist.

However, this is not the lone case of posting or circulating hate-mongering over social media platforms to which the police took cognizance. There are several other videos of similar nature of loathsome narratives circulating on the social media platform that if pondered thoroughly can also be proved equally cognizable.

“Police should rein-in the cow vigilante taking the law into their hands and behaving like a state by stopping the cattle being transported as per the law. If the unruly approach of the so-called cow vigilante continues the situation will surely take an ugly turn. If someone is transporting prohibited cattle and without proper permission, the police have a full liberty to take appropriate action against them as per the law of the land. However, cow vigilante has no locus standi in any manner to act against the transportation of cattle,” Syed Shoukat, a community activist.
