Fuel prices soar again; Hyderabad 2nd in metro cities with highest petrol prices

After a momentary pause, fuel prices in India have soared again. Though domestic diesel and petrol prices remained unchanged for a day, Saturday saw its rise by close to half a rupee. Several cities were on the receiving end of the hike with Hyderabad coming second to Mumbai. 

As part of the surge, petrol prices upped by up to 41 paise per litre and diesel increased by up to 24 paise a litre, The national capital was not spared with the hike as petrol went up from Rs 99.16 per litre to Rs. 99.51 per litre- an increase of 35 paise. Diesel is being sold in Delhi with a jump of 18 paise, taking the price to Rs 89.36 per litre. Rew district of Madhya Pradesh was the latest to join the ‘Rs.100 a litre diesel’ clan as diesel now sells here for Rs 100.18 per litre while petrol has gone ahead with Rs. 110.01 per litre.  

With this, 11 states in India have crossed the Rs 100 mark- the highest the nation has ever recorded. Among the metropolitan cities, Mumbai leads in petrol prices with Rs 105.58 a litre. As of July 4th, 2021, the revised price chart for metro cities shows: 

  • Mumbai: Petrol- Rs 105.58 & Diesel- Rs 96.91 
  • Hyderabad: Petrol- Rs 103.41 & Diesel- Rs 97.40 
  • Bengaluru: Petrol- Rs 102.84 & Diesel- Rs 94.72 
  • Chennai: Petrol- Rs 100.44 & Diesel- Rs 93.91 
  • Delhi: Petrol- Rs 99.51 & Diesel- Rs 89.36
  • Kolkata: Petrol- Rs 99.45 & Diesel: 92.27 

Andhra Pradesh’s Vishakapatnam is ahead of Hyderabad in terms of fuel rates as a litre of petrol is available at Rs 105.13 while customers will have to pay Rs 98.68 for diesel. Bihar, which is also in the list of states that pay over Rs 100 for fuel, has petrol priced at Rs 101.21 per litre while diesel costs Rs. 94.52 per litre in Patna.  

Including Ladakh, 12 states and UTs are forced to shell out more than Rs 100 for fuel. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, Rajasthan, Kerala, Odisha and Jammu & Kashmir become the rest of the 11 states.  

These fuel prices are based on the value-added tax (VAT) levied and are different in each state.  

As of now, Rajasthan is buying the most expensive fuel as in Sri Ganganagar, petrol is priced at a whopping Rs 110.77 a litre and diesel at Rs 102.60 per litre. Anuppur of Madhya Pradesh is trailing behind with a mere difference of 40 paise as petrol prices went up on Saturday and now petrol stands at Rs 110.37 per litre while diesel costs Rs. 100.51 for a litre. Indian motorists in Parbhani of Maharashtra come next as they pay Rs 107.89 a litre for petrol and Rs. 97.66 for a litre of diesel.
