During the IPL 2024 auction, Punjab Kings (PBKS) unintentionally purchased Shashank Singh, a 32-year-old batting all-rounder, but then attempted to cancel the bid. When PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta lifted the paddle for Shashank Singh during the accelerated portion of the auction, chaos ensued. However, once the proposal was accepted, commotion ensued at the PBKS table, with co-owners, notably Ness Wadia, voicing their astonishment.
After confirming Shashank Singh’s purchase for PBKS, auctioneer Mallika Sagar continued with the procedure. The uproar at the PBKS table, however, persisted, with Zinta and Wadia signaling that they would not bid for Shashank. Mallika Sagar, the auctioneer, argued that the hammer had already fallen for Shashank Singh, and that PBKS was obligated by the purchase.
The presence of two players called Shashank Singh in the IPL 2024 auction most certainly contributed to the confusion. The other Shashank Singh, a 19-year-old who has yet to play first-class cricket, was likewise priced at 20 lakh. PBKS mistakenly purchased a 32-year-old with prior IPL experience, having played for teams such as the Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Despite the obvious error, PBKS was forced to keep the player. This occurrence matched another instance during the auction in which the Delhi Capitals bid on Sumeet Verma instead of Sumit Kumar. In that situation, DC quickly corrected the error, and the bid was canceled because the hammer had not yet fallen.
The IPL 2024 auction proceeded with some unexpected turns, demonstrating the unpredictability of the bidding process for players from various franchises.
