Congress and AIUDF MLA’s walked out of Assam Assembly

On Monday, the opposition Congress and AIUDF  MLAs walked out on the first day of the four-day meeting of the Assam Assembly after the speaker denied their adjournment motion due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its administration in the state.

Opposing leader, Debabrata Saikia, requested a conversation on the pandemic and relevant issues, referring to Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s latest statement on the impact on the economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarma, on Saturday, while conversing with the media, had said that the state would suspend a large group of complimentary gifts given to COVID-19 patients as the state government has been confronting financial crisis because of the rising expenditure in Covid-19 management.

The opposing leader told the house that Covid-19 cases are ascending in Assam irrespective of the lockdown and different other measures that were taken. Contradicting the adjournment movement, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that the pandemic has struck Assam as well as the whole nation and the world.

The minister was reported saying to the opposition parties that Government is ready to discuss the issue but not through an adjournment motion. I request opposition parties to bring it in any other form

Dismissing the movement, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami said the issue isn’t of critical nature as the pandemic is going on for the last four-five months.

After the speaker dismissed the opposition movement and went to different other businesses of the house, the individuals from the Indian National Congress and AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) walked out of the house.

The four-day meeting of the Assam Assembly started on Monday in a calm way with only 50 percent of MLAs present inside the house to keep up social distancing measures for hindering the spread of Covid-19. Wearing masks, all Ministers and MLAs, senior authorities, workers, and Journalists went to the house.

On the initial day, 20 bills were tabled by the Assam government. The Business Advisory Committee led by the Speaker had previously determined that at any provided time, there would just be 50 percent MLAs inside the house and all groups have designated time slots to their individuals appropriately.

Other than utilizing the sanitizer, the body temperature level of everybody entering the Assembly complex was examined. A three-day camp was held in the Assembly premises and all Ministers, MLAs, authorities, workers, and reporters who might cover the proceedings had their samples tested for Covid-19. In the camp, at least 24 individuals, including five MLAs, have been tested positive for the Covid-19.

In any case, barely any social distancing measures were taken in the canteen of the Assembly complex with the vast majority of people muddled in the crowd.
