Delhi and Rajasthan Announce Lockdown Amidst Collapsing Healthcare Systems

Amidst the rising cases of Covid 19 in the national capital, Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has declared a six-day lockdown from 10 pm tonight to 6 am on April 26.

Healthcare System in India is on the Brink of Collapse

Kejriwal made the announcement during a televised address and said that the fourth wave of the coronavirus has brought the healthcare system near to collapse.

In the announcement, he said that the decision to impose a lockdown in Delhi is a move to prevent total collapse of the healthcare system. The decision was taken by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and LG Anil Baijal.

During the lockdown, essential services are allowed to operate and more beds will be set up for Covid patients. The national capital recently recorded 23,000 active covid cases in the past 24 hours. Following this, they had a meeting earlier in the day to discuss the steps moving forward.

Kejriwal added that the situation in the city is critical. Even though the health care system hasn’t collapsed yet but it is at an alarming stage. On Sunday, Kejriwal announced that there were less than one hundred ICU beds available in Delhi. The hospitals are suffering a shortage of oxygen as well.

Rajasthan Imposes 15-Day Lockdown

The Rajasthan government announced today that the state will be under a 15-day lockdown starting from today till May 3. The lockdown period has been named as Public Discipline Fortnight and has issued guidelines for the same.

Throughout the lockdown period, only essential services shall be allowed to operate and the rest will remain closed. Shops related to daily needs like dairy products, groceries, fruits, etc., will be allowed to remain until 5 pm. At the same time, petrol pumps are also allowed to remain open till 8 pm.

As per the guidelines, public transport and manufacturing units will remain operational along with NREGA projects. Crowded areas like bazaars, malls, shopping areas, cinema halls, and all religious places will remain closed. All the educational institutes, libraries, political programs have been suspended.
