Eidgahs in Hyderabad to be beautified for Eid-ul-Fitr

In preparation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, the Eidgahs in the city will be beautified after two long years. Due to the first and second waves of Covid-19, Muslims missed Eid-ul-Fitr prayers twice and Eid-ul-Adha prayers once as a consequence of lockdowns prompted by Covid-19.

It was necessary for them to pray at home during Eid. In the wake of the pandemic slowing down, the repairs and beautification works of Eidgahs in the city are set to begin soon. In the same way, as they used to do in the past, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), electricity, the Water Board, and other departments will coordinate the arrangements.

In addition, traffic arrangements will be made near the Eidgahs. In the meantime, the historic Eidgahs in the city, such as Madannapet, Mir Alam, and others have yet to receive renovation services. A cultural monument, the Old Eidgah at Madannapet was built in the 16th century during the Qutub Shahi rule. It is used only for Eid prayers. The structure, however, is in complete disrepair, with no cleaning measures taken so far.

The TS Waqf Board has approved a sum of Rs 2.3 lakh and soon, the cleaning and whitewash works will be undertaken, said Ravikiran, GHMC Assistant Engineer, Kurmaguda division.

The Eidgah Mir Alam, one of the largest Islamic congregational prayer places, which hosts over 1 lakh Muslims during the Eid prayer period, also lies in a state of neglect. In the absence of repairs, the ceiling and walls are chipping off. If the problem is not addressed soon, it can lead to a dangerous situation.

In addition to maintaining the building, the department should take up renovation work to preserve the age-old structure, said Mohammed Ahmed, a social activist. A similar situation exists for the Eidgahs in Saidabad, Masab Tank, Secunderabad, Hafeezpet and elsewhere where no provisions have been made by the relevant department.

The Aga Khan Trust for Culture will beautify another old Eidgah from the 15th century, which is situated in the Qutub Shahi necropolis, famously known as Seven Tombs. It underwent restoration a few years ago.

As the officials of the GHMC Electricity Wing assured of illuminating the premises of all Eidgahs, the Water Board will provide water for drinking and ablution purposes at designated spots within the premises.
