Elections in Five States, Advantages for BRS in Telangana

The recently announced election schedule for five Indian states by the Indian Election Commission has sparked political considerations and strategies among the major parties. Telangana, one of the states going to the polls, presents a unique scenario. The major political players in Telangana are the BRS, Congress, and BJP. However, both the BJP and the Congress seem to be prioritizing the other four states in their election campaigns.

In Telangana, the BJP’s chances of coming to power are slim, and for the Congress, the other four states are equally important in the upcoming elections. The BRS currently holds power in Telangana, while the BJP governs Madhya Pradesh, and the Congress is in charge of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Mizoram is under the leadership of the Mizo National Front.

Considering the upcoming general elections, gaining power in the poll-bound states is crucial for both the Congress and the BJP. As a result, these two parties are likely to focus more on the four states that will go to the polls before Telangana, which is scheduled for the last round. Had the Telangana Assembly elections been held separately, the BJP and Congress might have concentrated more on their election campaigns in Telangana.

However, with the current schedule, the ruling BRS in Telangana may face less competition from the BJP and the Congress, and both of these national parties will have to rely more on local leaders for their campaigns.

In Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, along with ministers KT Rama Rao and T Harish Rao, serve as the star campaigners for the BRS. Local leaders of the BJP and the Congress may find it challenging to compete with the BRS’s star campaigners.

Furthermore, the national leaders of the BJP and the Congress may not have the opportunity to campaign extensively in Telangana, as they will be preoccupied with election campaigns in the other four states.

Among the five states, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram will go to the polls on November 7, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Rajasthan’s polling is scheduled for November 24, and when the national leaders of the BJP and the Congress visit Chhattisgarh for campaigning, they may also campaign in Telangana.

However, it’s worth noting that the gap between the polling dates of Rajasthan and Telangana is only six days, and the election campaign will conclude 48 hours before the polls in each state.
