Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s First Muslim First Minister Resigns

Humza Yousaf, the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader of Pakistani origin, who became Scotland’s first Muslim leader in March last year, announced his resignation on Monday amidst political turmoil for the SNP-led government.

Yousaf, aged 39, who was also Scotland’s youngest First Minister, recently terminated a power-sharing agreement with the Scottish Green Party due to escalating policy differences, causing a crisis in his minority government. Subsequently, his former Green Party allies aligned with the Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat parties to support two non-confidence motions—one against Yousaf’s leadership and the other targeting the entire Scottish government.

While it was possible to navigate through this week’s no-confidence motion, Yousaf expressed his unwillingness to compromise his values or engage in political bargaining solely for retaining power. “Therefore, after spending the weekend reflecting on what is best for my party, for the government, and for the country I lead, I have concluded that repairing our relationship across the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm,” he stated.

Addressing the media at Bute House in Edinburgh, Yousaf expressed sadness at the end of his tenure as First Minister but conveyed gratitude for the rare opportunity to lead his country. “I am so blessed for having the opportunity that are afforded to so few to lead my country, and who could ask for a better country to lead than Scotland,” he emotionally remarked. Yousaf, whose heritage traces back to Pakistan and Kenya, acknowledged the UK’s diversity and made reference to Rishi Sunak as Britain’s first Hindu Prime Minister during his resignation speech.
