Hyderabad: 22 dilapidated structures demolished and 4 buildings sealed by GHMC

A special demolition drive has been launched by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in order to be completely ready for the monsoon season. Within two days, 22 dilapidated structures have been demolished and four structurally unsound structures have been sealed.

The structures that were sealed were posted with caution notices, and dilapidated buildings were served with demolition/repair notices.

Within the limits of the GHMC, there have been 524 identified dilapidated structures. According to a press release, the special drive will continue until all dilapidated structures are fixed.

For the sake of protecting lives and property, the civic body asked people living in dilapidated buildings to cooperate with them in demolition or repair.

As per Municipal Administration & Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao’s instructions, action was taken on dilapidated buildings. To ensure that structurally unfit buildings are addressed, the GHMC instructed its deputy city planners and assistant city planners to prepare compliance reports.

Along with this, all builders, architects, structural engineers and contractors, including site engineers and supervisors, have been instructed by the GHMC commissioner ahead of the monsoon season to take precautionary measures to prevent scaffolding accidents.

Despite being temporary, scaffolding works such as props, uprights, posts, frames, and similar rigid supports require special attention. Before concreting, the site must be thoroughly checked. Each employee must be trained by a qualified person on how to recognize, control, or minimize the hazards associated with the type of scaffold being used, the instructions said.

Furthermore, the commissioner instructed architects to ensure scaffolding’s structural integrity. There is a need to ensure the safety of both the workers and the concrete structure, it read.

The GHMC also listed measures to be taken during cellar excavations. During the work, owners and contractors should pay attention to slope stability and earth retention, they said.
