Hyderabad: Flood alert sounded for Musi river

Hyderabad: As Heavy rains lashed the city, Officials have sounded flood alert in the Musi river here as the water levels in the two water bodies upstream have outreach to the brim following heavy rainfall in areas.

It has been raining heavily since Friday night. All the main roads in the city were inundated with incessant rain. Authorities said Saturday night that Osman Sagar is full and it is receiving a movement of water  20,000 cusecs. “Gates may be opened any time,” they said.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has a query to all deputy commissioners and zonal commissioners of Charminar, Himayath Nagar Saidabad,  Asif Nagar, Bahadurpura, Golconda, and Nampally, to be on high alert for flood and evacuation if the need arises.

The full Tank Level of Osman Sagar is 1,753 feet. The classical reservoir has been dead for the aftermost few years.

Meantime, the gates of Himayat Sagar are also likely to be opened Saturday night as the lake is receiving huge inflows due to heavy rains in the watershed areas.

Anjani Kumar,  Hyderabad city Police Commissioner advised people in areas on the banks of the Musi river to be alert. “Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Musi River, flash floods may come after the witching hour. It is better to be alert on the banks of the river like Jiaguda, Puranapul, Kishanbagh, Golnaka, Chaderghat, MGBS,” he said.


Torrential rain have been thumping Hyderabad and surrounding areas since Friday. Several parts of Rangareddy district including the watershed Zone of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar received heavy rainfall since Friday night.
