Hyderabad: GHMC releases election schedule for Standing Committee

As the current tenure of the 15-member Standing Committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ends on November 14, the corporators will elect a new panel through the ballot on November 19. Elections for 15 members of the new Standing Committee were announced by the city body on Tuesday.

In accordance with the election notification, the GHMC will accept nominations from corporators between November 2 and November 10, excluding public holidays on November 6 and 8. On November 10, a list of valid nominations will be published, and nominations will be scrutinized on November 11.

The deadline for withdrawal is November 14, and the final list of contesting candidates will be published that day after 3 p.m. On November 19, polling will take place from 10 am to 3 pm, and results will be tallied at GHMC headquarters after 3 pm.

GHMC’s 15-member apex committee, headed by the Mayor, makes important policy decisions. This committee approves all development works between Rs 2-3 crore, while works under Rs 2 crore are approved by the GHMC Commissioner or Zonal Commissioners. Proposals should be placed in the council meeting for works ranging from Rs 3-6 crore, and if the cost of the works exceeds Rs 6 crore, they should be sent to the State government for approval.

Members are likely to be elected unanimously again this year, as the TRS and the AIMIM have a majority of corporators in the GHMC and are likely to share the seats.

The Standing Committee will most likely have eight TRS members and seven AIMIM members, as it did last year.

According to GHMC officials, the Standing Committee should have no fewer than five and no more than 15 members, with one member for every ten wards. Since the GHMC has 150 wards, it will have 15 members, one for every ten wards.

The members of this committee will serve for one year from the date of the election, subject to the first provision of Clause (b) of 93 of the Act.
