Hyderabad: Multipurpose indoor sports complex to come up at Banjara Hills

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is constructing an indoor sports complex in NBT Nagar, Banjara Hills, with an estimated budget of Rs 6 crore as part of its efforts to encourage sports.

Sources have reported that construction of the sports facility is expected to be complete by June 2023, making it available to young sports talent in the city. The facility will also host the popular GHMC summer camps for children in addition to regular sports activities.

Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi laid the foundation stone for the facility on Sunday. This three-story indoor sports complex will encompass over 1 lakh square feet and include a Cricket box, Kabaddi court, Badminton court, Tennis court, gyms, and an exclusive yoga room beside Carrom and Chess. Additionally, the new sports facility will have lobbies, lifts, a pantry, seating areas, and separate changing rooms for men and women.

There will also be parking facilities and shops on the first floor of the NBT Nagar Indoor Sports Complex. A GHMC official said the rent from the shops would be used to maintain the sports complex.

This sports complex will fulfill the dreams of many young sports talent as well as save 1 lakh square feet of government land for public use, the Mayor said after laying the foundation stone. “In Banjara Hills, there are around 18,000 people who reside in slums. There is a government school and around nine private schools and this facility will be of great use to them,” she said.

According to GHMC officials, some people have attempted to encroach on the land and made many attempts to halt the proposal to build the sports complex here. However, through legal action, the corporation may be able to save the land parcel from encroachers.
