Hyderabad police stop Telangana Congress chief from visiting state Secretariat

On Monday, Hyderabad police stopped Telangana Congress chief A. Revanth Reddy from visiting the state Secretariat. Revanth Reddy was stopped by the police near Telephone Bhavan, near the Secretariat. Revanth, who is also a member of Parliament, took exception to the police action. He stated that he was going to the Secretariat to meet with Special Chief Secretary Municipal Administration Arvind Kumar about the leasing of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to a private party.

He questioned the government’s decision to lease ORR for 30 years. According to police, Revanth was stopped because he had not obtained permission to meet with officials. The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief argued that appointments to go the Secretariat are unnecessary.

Revanth wanted to know the rules under which he was being stopped. Police have beefed up security at the Secretariat, which was inaugurated on Sunday. At the entrance, barricades have been erected.

The TPCC chief said that the leasing of ORR by the government as a big scam. He claimed that the project, which is expected to generate Rs 30,000 crore over the next ten years, was leased for just Rs 7,380 crore. Revanth had told reporters on Sunday that huge sums had changed hands in the deal. He argued that the ORR, which is expected to grow at least 10% per year, cannot be given away at a throwaway lease price.

He claimed that the ORR toll collection is Rs 2 crore per day, and that the extension without a tender benefited the bigwigs, and that Minister for Municipal Administration K. T. Rama Rao should explain why the extension without a tender was granted. He stated that the Congress government would review the lease as soon as it takes power following the next elections and warned that those involved in the shady deal would not be spared.
