Hyderabad: Projects worth Rs 2,250 crore launched for flood control

According to government officials, efforts to prevent water logging in urban areas have been accelerated.  In many low-lying areas of the city that suffer from water logging during monsoon, projects worth Rs 2250 crore have been launched.

Widening of stormwater drains, building retaining walls near small stormwater drains, building box drains, desilting of stormwater drains, and repairing existing drains are some of the major works currently underway.

There are also ongoing efforts to deal exclusively with issues related to nalas in the city and mitigate the adverse effects of heavy rains, officials said.

Additionally, many stormwater drains have been covered with pre-cast slabs and some have been barred with link mesh to ensure public safety during the monsoon.

Banners were also displayed at some deep stormwater drains to alert people. Efforts are being made to end urban flooding in the city in a series of steps. Lakes and other water bodies are also undergoing many works.

Various measures have been taken to restore weirs and sluices, strengthen bunds and fences, and divert sewage from lakes.

Of the Rs. 2,250 crore, works worth Rs.415 crore are being carried out by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s Engineering Wing, while works worth Rs.1,006 crore are being carried out by its Projects Wing. Meanwhile, strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) works are underway with Rs 735 crore, and work at lakes and other water bodies with Rs 94 crore.

37 works were proposed under SNDP in the GHMC limits, of which 36 are underway at a brisk pace, while one has been halted due to traffic issues. Thirteen of the 36 works are being executed on a war footing and are expected to be completed in July. A press release from the GHMC said the corporation is trying to complete the remaining works as soon as possible.

At the same time, the GHMC is also desilting stormwater drains. This year, 371 desilting works were completed at a cost of Rs 56.31 crore. According to the press release, the corporation was able to remove 3.39 lakh cubic meters of silt.
