Hyderabad: Safety teams deployed as monsoon intensifies across city

Safety vehicle teams were deployed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Tuesday as the monsoon season picks up pace across the city.

Heavy rains across the city have caused overflowing manholes and stagnant water on city roads. These teams are intended to address these issues immediately.

MD Danakishor announced the deployment of sixteen monsoon safety teams, each with five members. They will be on the move twenty-four hours a day, he said.

Generators containing diesel motors are included in each vehicle. There are also digging bars, ropes for protection, and other equipment on each team. “These teams will make sure water blockades are addressed wherever there are difficulties,” he said.

He added that the teams would focus primarily on 211 water logging areas identified by the GHMC.

According to the waterworks MD, 16 additional Airtech vehicles will also be deployed soon along with these safety team vehicles. Ensure that garbage does not accumulate at drinking water pipe crossings, he instructed the officials. Furthermore, he directed them to place warning boards at manholes in waterlogged areas and to position sewerage supervisors there.

It is important that the ground staff are protected during the process, so he asked officials to ensure that they wear protective equipment. He suggested that GMs resolve complaints about polluted water and manhole overflows as a matter of priority.

Furthermore, Danakishor said that deep manholes have been fitted with iron grills as part of monsoon preparations. There should be no public access to manhole covers at all costs. He warned that it is a crime to open or remove manhole covers under the HMWSSB Act Section 74.

For complaints regarding water logging or damage to manhole covers, the public can call 155313 (HMWSSB customer care).

As part of the campaign, NGOs and residential welfare associations are cooperating with him to conduct awareness campaigns on social media, SMS, voice calls, and FM radio.
