Hyderabad: Protest breaks out after cops detain drunk drivers

According to the latest reports, a protest had broken out after Asifnagar police detained motorists who were caught drinking and driving.

As the Asifnagar police were conducting a drunk driving check at Gudimalkapur on Sunday night, a few passengers who allegedly had consumed a few drinks landed right in front of them. When the police came to detain the vehicles, as they usually do, the scene suddenly changed.

After a few of them tried to stop the police from seizing their vehicles, their dissent soon turned vociferous, with a few others blocking other vehicles as well.

Quite unexpectedly, a mob soon gathered and began raising slogans against the Traffic police, some even wailing loudly that they wanted ‘justice’. Continuing to block traffic on the road, arguing with other motorists and also with the police, a traffic jam quickly formed at the spot.

“During the drunk driving check, a few of the people caught prevented the police from moving their vehicles. The local law and order police responded to the situation and dispersed the mob,” Asifnagar Traffic Inspector Sudheer Kumar said, adding that the traffic jam was also cleared slowly.

Later, the police booked a case against the drunk drivers and ordered them to appear in court. The cops discovered that the individuals stopped by them had consumed liquor at a nearby liquor store and were driving home when they were caught.

Additionally, it is alleged that a few wine shops and bars in the area are unhappy with regular drunk driving checks since they are ‘affecting’ their business and are allegedly instigating some customers to protest.

For the last few weeks, the Hyderabad traffic police have ramped up their efforts in catching drunk drivers. Along with this, The Traffic Police are also cracking down against multi-toned horns and air horns as well.
