Hyderabad: Skywalk to soon come up at Uppal junction

The first pedestrian-friendly Elevated Walkway or Skywalk in Telangana will open at the bustling Uppal junction by January 2023. The elevated walkway, which will be an engineering marvel like the Cable-Stayed Bridge at Durgam Cheruvu, will connect six sides while also integrating the Uppal Metro Station at the concourse level and various bus stops.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is preparing the 640-meter elevated skywalk at a cost of Rs 26 crore. It has become necessary because Uppal is one of the busiest intersections in the city, where traffic congestion is common and pedestrian accidents are frequently reported.

Sources have reported that the skywalk’s six HOP entry and exit points will be a combination of staircases, lifts, and escalators. Unlike traditional skywalks, which allow pedestrians to move from one end to the other, the Uppal skywalk allows for movement in multiple directions.

Entry and exit points will be provided near the Metro Station towards Nagole Road, Ramanthapur Road, the GHMC Theme Park, the Warangal Bus Stop (GHMC office), adjacent to the Uppal Police Station/MRO Office, and opposite the Uppal substation. According to sources, the structures circumnavigate the junctions.

The elevated structure is intended to provide a pleasant experience for users traveling to and from the location. According to sources, the walkway will have an attractive appearance, with a width of four meters and six meters at some locations for the creation of small kiosks.

The state government wishes to encourage pedestrians to use skywalks in order to reduce accidents and traffic congestion. Another elevated walkway is being built at the busy Mehdipatnam junction.

K.T. Rama Rao, Telangana minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, recently inaugurated the Nagole flyover, which will improve traffic flow from LB Nagar to Secunderabad. The flyover is 990 meters long and has six lanes.

In November and December, the city will get two more flyovers, at Shilpa Layout and Kothaguda.

The Shilpa flyover will assist commuters traveling from Shilpa Layout to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Gachibowli Junction, whereas the Kothaguda flyover will alleviate traffic congestion in Botanical Garden, Kothaguda, and Kondapur.
